An interview with jassy husk

Through dedication and discipline. Since the age of six, I knew I wanted to sing, I’ve never stopped training and learning. I’ve greatly benefitted from mentorship. This included coaching by some of the world’s leading singers, coaches, conductors and directors. I’ve been lucky enough to work with greats such as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa; Dennis O’Neil CBE, Gerald Martin Moore and Sir Richard Bonynge.

I still work with expert coaches. Most recently I visited Glyndebourne to work with Gerald Martin Moore. From my base in Singapore I rehearse at Yale-NUS University where I have had the pleasure of working with students as the Head of Voice for the past three years.

I work hard to support my voice through a daily routine.  Not being a morning person, my days start slowly. Really slowly. Accompanied by a pot of earl grey tea, I run through the meetings ahead before chatting with the manager.

If I’m not attending an opening night, cultural event or performing, I read books, librettos or scripts. Although I love a dry martini, I rarely have a drink, because alcohol adversely impacts my ability to rehearse, it irritates and dehydrates the voice. Like a gymnast, I have to take care and exercise the muscles that enable me to perform.

I’ve become almost completely vegan over the last few years, partly to help my voice. Cutting out dairy in particular has a very positive impact on the longevity and resilience of the voice. Exercise and sport are vital so I run daily.

How would you describe your voice?

I see and feel the world in terms of sound, tones and notes rather than words or text.

As a classically trained Soprano, my voice has evolved through training whilst maintaining its unique sound. It’s a bright, dramatic voice underpinned by rigorous technical focus, with a natural warmth, passion and golden tone. The great Welsh Tenor Dennis O’Neill CBE describes my voice as being “outstanding in quality with high levels of musicianship and dramatic insight”.

My voice suits roles demanding a bright, powerful timbre and extensive agility and precision, with a rich, dramatic line. The versatility of my singing means my vocal sound is a great fit for a range of musical genres. The film soundtracks I’ve performed on, such as The Hobbit and Snow White and the Huntsman, require not only a versatile and unique voice type but also the ability to sight read.

The natural vibrations of my voice are perfect for a recording studio, which is why I’ve been invited to collaborate with international recording artists such as Pete Tong on his UK No.1 Album Ibiza Classics. In comparison, operatic roles like Tosca, which I performed with Paul Potts, demand the actor’s craft of interpretation.

What themes inspire you?

I’m artist, so I love stories! I’m keen to work with new productions that speak to contemporary themes, portray people as multifaceted human beings rather than two dimensional objects and, moreover, inspire.

For me, art has to have something to say. I collaborate with visual artists, poets, and sound artists to produce new, relevant works, which question audiences and keep them on the edge of their seats.

Where do you perform?

I perform internationally from my base in Singapore.  For several years, I held the role of principal Soprano for an extensive gala tour across 10 cities in China, in which I sung popular operatic arias. I’ve performed professionally worldwide from the Sydney Opera House to the London Coliseum.

Perhaps the most magical place I’ve performed is at Sark Opera Festival in the Channel Islands. With just a population of 400 people, no paved roads and no street lights, it is a magical island tucked between the English South Coast and France. A truly memorable location.

How do you broaden your repertoire?

By collaborating with other artists. Be it composing a musical score from a libretto or providing the soundscape for a new theatre play. I sing in Mandarin, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian and English. To sing in an audience’s language makes the work accessible, and it’s really important for me to connect to people through music.

What do the different music genres give you that Opera can’t?

I don’t discriminate between genres. I enjoy a wide variety of musical forms, whether that’s click song in South Africa, handbag house, music theatre, opera, rap music, or Kyrgyz epic poetry forms. Art is art. For me, every genre has something wonderful to offer.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not performing?

One of my biggest passions in life is to keep learning. In no particular order: hanging out with family and friends, travelling, discovering new cultures, and learning new languages. It is difficult for me to be outside of music. Music has always been an intrinsic part of my life and who I am.
